Both, therefore, are the natural enemies of the businessmen and their politician cronies who lorded it in the dictatorship's days. Far from respecting the president's decisive electoral mandate, the old elite has been trying to undermine it and scupper his reformist agenda.
The president himself, however, must bear some of the blame for this. He did not come out clearly in support of his embattled colleagues until this week. He has preferred to try to placate all-comers in the name of consensus.
